About This Image
I stripped down my macro gear and set the Z9 up for capturing insect jet fighters. I decided to use the 105mm for its autofocus and cranked up the Iso. The bee balm is still producing nectar so I waited for my quarry. After an hour, I saw what I was after, the hummingbird clearwing moth. These guys are fast, but easier to get than flying bumblebees.

I used Shadows and Highlights to lighten up the BG. I found that the RAW file had a very dark BG which tended to obscure the subject. Do you think that there is enough separation of the subject and BG?
Jim, you nailed it! 1/4000 was enough to stop the action. Yes, I think the BG has enough separation and I like that the wings are stopped and I can see through the clear portion, hence their name Clearwing. The eyes are beautiful. I’m jealous. I haven’t been as successful capturing these. They just haven’t come up where I would have the side view of them as you have here. They are very fast. Well done!
As to your question about separation from the background, it looks quite good to me, especially since it looks like moth is colored to fit into that very background. You did a fine job getting beautiful focus on the subject and while I’m fond of wing blur, in this case it’s interesting to be able to see the patterns on the wings. With the form of the tail and those dangling legs, they should call this a flying shrimp.
Fantastic - mastering the tech and lovely image.
No suggestions - except I might do a slighter tighter crop to show the insect a bit bigger in the Fram - but original is fine to my eye.
Jim: A spectacular capture in every respect. Great technique that comes from a thorough understanding of your gear and how to use it to best result. One of if not the best clear wing shot I’ve seen in a long time. >=))>

One of the best clearwing moth shots in a long time. Jim’s use of his flash is masterful and confirms him as one of hte most accomplished macro shooters on the site. >=))>
Fantastic!! Separation from the BG is just right for my taste and detail on the moth is top-notch! I could also see a version with the moth bigger in the frame, as it is so beautifully captured. The brighter flower competes a bit.
I’m curious as to what your stripped-down rig is – a single diffused flash? Whatever, it is working very well.
