Amazing that ti stood still, Allen. I participated in monitoring for invasive green crabs for quite a few years and we caught tons of these in the traps. None of them ever stayed still for me! This is a great shot of one. Your head on angle worked beautifully. No nits from me.
Thanks for commenting, Dennis. Beyond a generic crab, I have no idea what any one species is called, but I-Naturalist ID’d this as a Purple Shore Crab, indigenous to the west coast. Is this something else?
At first sight I thought the view of its environment clashed a bit with the crab; but then when I examined the blurred barnacles plus shells, this shot really “grew on me” - the fine symmetrical front view of the crab is stunning!
Hi Allen. The ID you got is correct. The purple dots on the claws are diagnostic. We were trapping in hopes of not finding any green crabs as we were the furthest south location in Puget Sound. So we caught a lot of crabs in the traps, but thankfully no bad ones. The purple was one of the most common.
P.S. The common “color” names for crabs are utterly useless for ID. Their patterns and colors vary far too much.
Allen, I just love this shot. It’s like he saying to you, “take a picture of me”, about like kids would do. That straight on look at you is priceless. Very nice details where they need to be.
Oh, this is great!! Crabs rarely sit still for me. That face and pose is priceless, and the complementary colours are excellent.
Congrats on a very cool subject and EP!
Hi Allen, really great straight on pose and I love that look right at me. Nice sharpness where it counts most. Love the colors too. Congrats on the EP!
