Description
We were searching for rhinos in Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. We had seen a few white rhinos but no blacks, until suddenly this black rhino came rumbling across the field toward us!
Specific Feedback
Framing, lighting and color. How can I make this picture better? I am always a little unsure with the best way to present animals coming directly towards me.
Any photo of a black rhino is special. I do like the head on shot. Like the Oxpeckers, also. I too struggle with how to frame head on shots. I think I would try a horizontal format and give the rhino more space all the way around. An image like this sometimes benefits from trying different crops t see what works best.
Hi Timothy! Keep in mind that I’m not a wildlife photographer so my feedback is more about the animal and composition. So…here are my “two cents!”
He is a beautiful animal in spite of what look like chewed ears, etc. from battle with other males. I normally don’t think that subjects centered in the frame work well, but here it does. I’m not sure how one would capture a charging animal otherwise. The symmetry of his body really shows off his features: the curves of the body and ears, justaposed with the horn and facial features work well. If you’re familiar with dynamic symmetry as a composition technique, I see it working here. I might try cropping up from the bottom about 25% to make him more dominant.
The lighting is fine (it was what it was!). You might try brightening the grasses a bit and perhaps adding a little contrast.

Wow! Beautiful head shot with the horn nicely centered. I too wonder what a horizontal image would look like with as @Jerry_Austin mentioned. It does seem a little “closed in” from side to side. You have a wonderful DOF and the grass in front provides that nice separation from foreground to background. Very nice light and warm tones throughout the entire image. The eyes are spot on and sharp, even in shadow. To me, that makes the image intense. Great work!!
The limited and subtle colour palette is gorgeous. I love the pose, with tattered ears and little birds. I love the grasses that cradle him/her. Your DoF has worked its magic, putting everything on that beautiful brown face.
Beautiful frame and I just love that horn!
I may prefer to have some more canvas on top and it may gain for some increase in contrast.
Topaz doesn’t appear to work great with fine grasses here.
I think the best way to frame a photograph with a Rhino coming directly at you is to run the other way! But I digress - Sorry for my humor, I can’t help myself. As to the photograph, it’s downright amazing with a perfectly balanced centered composition. Thank you for sharing!
