We were in Sabi Sand game reserve and saw this white rhino at a waterhole. It was the first rhino we had seen and we were excited to just hang out a while. He was very relaxed. We were fascinated by how beat up he was. I liked this photo as I thought it showed some great textures and contrast.

Hi Timothy,
What a wonderful opportunity to observe this animal in the wild. It clearly has the scares indicating a hard existence. Critique wise I think the crop is too tight, I would like to see more of the animal itself and its habitat.

Great title for this one, as it does feel sooooo close. I think Alice is on to something with a suggestion for a wider crop, but I also see the value of this one. To be honest with you, when I first saw it, I thought I was looking at an abstract of a rock face. I’m hoping you have lots of images of these rhinos. They would make a great series, with this one as an opener, and then with others with more body and more environment.

Timothy: I like your unique approach to the subject as well as the black and white treatment. All of the animal’s nicks, scrapes and scars are evident. You were fortunate to see a rhino with a full horn as many have been cut to prevent poaching. Very well done!
