Taken this morning under cloudy skies.
This nuthatch has been spending a lot of time around my house. Today, it brought three juveniles to feed on one of my feeder set ups. They were pretty noisy and very happy it seems to be eating what I had put out for them. At times the parent was feeding some of the juveniles and I’m hoping to catch this behavior in the next few days. Very cute.

Pertinent technical details or techniques: iso-1600, 100-400+1.4 extender at 560 mm, F8, 1250th, handheld, around 40% of full frame, fill flash, no sharpening added, in fact, I used the blur tool on the head to decrease some of the existing sharpening.

You are so lucky to have these little guys visiting you David. Lovely photo. I like the composition, the background and also how the branch goes off at just a slight angle. Wonderful capture.

Hi David
Nice color, setting and sharpness. The Nuthatch looks like it just wants to sure the juvenilies are ok. Nice work.

[Very cool, David, and I’m incredibly jealous that you have juvenile nuthatches to photograph. I like this. Your depth of field and the bokeh of the lens you’re using make the out of focus perch going up in the back feel quite reasonable. Looking forward to seeing the youngsters.

Nice to be able to get the nuthatch to pose for you in this position. Excellent detail against a nice background. Like the perch .

Beautifully sharp detail on the bird. That’s a cool perch with that vegetation on it. Minor nit is I wish the angle gave a touch more separation between perch and beak. But not a big deal. It’s really a lovely image.

Terri;
Agree about the separation. I will post more as I get them…

Beautiful bird, perch, and BG. Great image quality. My only nit is what Terri mentioned. If that portion of the BG were green, I think it would appear as if there’s more separation than there is.

Beautiful soft light here David. What a great perch and a beautiful background. Good that the beak didn’t intersect the branch. I wish I could see the feet but I really like the green growth in front of the bird so it’s a toss-up. Nice set up!

If you enlarge it, you can see the feet…
