Resting while watchful

This bull elk was resting in the grasses and shrubs while his harem grazed nearby near the North entrance to Yellowstone. He was watchful but clearly not threatened by the two much smaller bulls jousting in the field behind me. (7D2, 100-400 @ 349, 1/100 s, f/10, iso 200, tripod)

Wow, Mark, he’s gorgeous. You framed him well for sure. the contrast between the soft grasses and flowers and the crisp points of his antlers is really nice. Looks like some shedding / molting going on, too. Gotta get ready for another winter. He certainly does look like power at rest. Beautiful job.

Wonderful!! You got an attention-getting look and the pose does tell a story of power at rest. He doesn’t look worried about any competition. The colors are lovely and soft. I love the late autumn vegetation and it fits so well with his rough coat. I have to wonder how an animal this size and power can get enough nourishment from the vegetation up there.

Great subject with wonderful antlers, beautifully framed !
It resembles the Sambar deer we have in India.

Hi Mark,

Elk in rabbit brush go well together. Nice pose, nice light make in an ideal image. Well done…Jim

Such a beautiful image. The subtle palette is over the top wonderful. The elk is so beautifully framed by the little shrubs and he’s given you a perfect pose.
