In an old growth forest, a fallen stump from a dead tree can provide the nutrients to allow for new growth to thrive. Seen here are several trees that have taken root in this “nurse log”, and over many years have grown quite large. It is easy to get lost and feel very small among these giants of nature.

I’ve been waiting for a “nurse log” view from the Temperate Rain Forest. This shows the effect well. Those are indeed big trees, so the fallen log has been there a long time.
An excellent demonstration of this phenomenon, Ted. I really like the way the background works in this image. So often all the light in the background in forest images is overwhelming, but this is quite mellow. Given the small amount of space between the left trunk and the edge, you might experiment with taking some off the right edge as well.
Very cool to have found so many trees growing out of that nurse log. I like the lighting, but I feel like the bright highlights in the middle of the frame to be an eye magnet keeping my eye form wandering the scene. Could the highlights be brought down?
Quite amazing and well photographed! I don’t mind the “extra” space on the right as the delicate branches there fill it interestingly. If this was cropped and there is a tiny bit more on the left, for my taste it would be worth a look at including a little more there. I don’t mind the bright highlights in the center but wonder about the slightest reduction of the brightest one on the left tree and the ground. A lovely scene in any case!
