Roadrunner portrait

The few roadrunners I’ve seen have always lived up to their name, scurrying along the ground, so I was surprised to see this one in a bush. It was in the morning and I’m guessing they roost there over night where they are well camouflaged. Also, if you look closely, roadrunners have eyelashes. I read up on this and they are not common in birds and are modified feathers.

I’m pretty happy with how this turned out. There seems to have been some foliage between the camera and the rear head feathers, but otherwise I was pleased with the detail. It needed very little processing, which tells me that in good conditions my gear is just fine.

Taken in Yuma, Arizona a week ago, in early morning sun over my shoulder.

Awesome detail, Allen. I love how much there can be to look at in a bird’s plumage when you can get a close-up like this. In the little experience I’ve had with this species, I have seen them perched in the morning and evening.

What a nice portrait of this beautiful Roadrunner, Allen. Such great details in the plumage. I have never seen one before, I don’t think they are in this area at all.
