I echo Sandy’s sentiments. What a fantastic little creature. So much to love and squee over. In addition to the tiny stick, I wonder if cropping some of the berries on the bottom might be good too. They are so bright and eye-catching that it diminishes the bird somewhat, cute though it is. Did you happen upon this scene, or did you notice them around and waited for the right moment? Your dedication is appreciated no matter what. I haven’t seen these guy since spring, but maybe they’ll come back through.
Thanks, Kristen. In the spirit of full disclosure, I pass this bush on my daily walk and think it would make for a nice image if only a bird would land there. No luck, so I helped the process by playing some bird calls and a few birds came to investigate.
Wonderful catch in a lovely setting. There is a noticeable yellow cast that could be fixed in the raw stage with the Temp slider. Fixing it does remove some of the drama but the bird could be brought back up with a simple mask – wouldn’t need to be perfect as long as it didn’t extend out into the BG. Not as effective to try to fix it on a JPEG but here’s the ides.
I used to try bird calls years ago with some slight success and somehow lost the app. Is there a good one?
Thanks, Diane. I guess it’s a matter of personal preference, but I kind of like the yellow glow. Merlin can be used for bird calls, as can the Audubon app. I’m familiar with, though don’t have, an app called BirdPro and Sibley has an app as well.
Hi Allen, really nice catch with the berries and the bird in a great position. Posed just right for you. I like the warmth in the image - is this from early morning sunlight? Really nice frame.
Thanks for the info on the calls – I’ll check them out.
I wonder if adding some saturation to yellows (after a color balance) could give a very nice look that is different from a color cast. (I didn’t do that in my post just to show how pronounced the cast is.)

I wonder if adding some saturation to yellows (after some color balance correction) could give a nice look that is different from a color cast. (I didn’t do that in my post just to show how pronounced the cast is.) Early/late light is more complex than what we can get by moving the Tint slider. It may look good at first but there are more subtle ways to get a warm look.
