Sage Thrasher

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

For no good reason, the Sage Thrasher was my target bird on my recent trip to Malheur NWR. Finally found a few in the distance. Not my best shot as the bird was far away and this is a tight crop, but the eye is more or less sharp and it shows the bird on its namesake perch.

Specific Feedback

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi Allen
Thank you for sending us a Sage Thrasher, it’s not an East Cost bird. I like the framing and eye contact. Nice work.

Nice job, Allen. At the largest size the loss of image quality is pretty obvious. I don’t know if the focus was slightly off or if atmospheric distortion played a part-something that happens easily in the desert. It’s worth searching for this species just to hear them sing, even if you never get a shot.

Just curious if you were shooting this handheld or from a tripod? With only 800th of second and at 700mm it might just be camera shake causing the slight OOF image. Love that eye and speckled chest. You could dodge that dark branch in the background if you want to make it less distracting. I’ve never been able to get a good shot of one of these. You did well here.

Thanks, David. The shot was handheld. I usually shoot at 1/1000, but I probably accidentally turned the dial without realizing it.

Hi Allen - great to catch this guy, even at a distance. I have NO images of sage thrashers. I didn’t even see them at Malheur. Love the spotted chest and eye.
