Hermit Thrush

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This guy was flitting through the brambles, but finally popped up to give me a clear shot. Typically a winter bird in our area, the new shoots suggests it will be leaving soon.

Specific Feedback

Any thoughts appreciated.

Wonderful!! I love the detail on the bird and the smooth BG. The blackberry leaves are a nice hint of habitat. He looks like he is contemplating a journey…

Great image, Allen. I love the background and the sharp brambles. The pose is pretty spectacular too. I’m not sure about the leaves on the left…sometimes they’re distracting, sometimes they lend context…All in all, it’s a great image.

Sweet image, Allen! Fine detail througout, and very complimentary BG.
The blackberry leaves and thorns add a lot, and you caught a nice bright eye.
Well-done!

Allen: there is very good detail in the bird’s feathers and its perch. I like its pose and the catchlight in its eye. The greenery adds a nice element to the frame.

I like this one as presented. The head turn and brighter BG brings out the thrush nicely. The little bit of greenery on the LH side works well for environmental context. Awesome…Jim

This is really sweet, Allen. Great to get such an elusive bird out in the open. I think I’ve only gotten a glimpse of one in my life, let alone a photograph, and let alone one of this quality. I’m a bit ambivalent about the inclusion of last year’s leaves on the left, but I think they do help balance the composition. An alternate might be a square composition just cropping from the left.

Thanks @Diane_Miller , @David_Bostock , @Sandy_Richards-Brown , @Richard_Sandor , @Jim_Zablotny , and @Dennis_Plank for your kind comments. I liked the background on this one and I kept in the leaves so it wasn’t on a bare vine-I think it does give the image some balance and, as an afterthought, there’s the new buds and old leaves.
