Sandia CanCan

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

New dahlias continue to show up in the vegetable garden. Sandia CanCan features cupped petals which is why I chose this more lateral view of the flower. This variety originated from Birch Run Dahlias which is located near Seattle, Washington. I gave a tweak to curves to get the highlights and shadows to be more prominent.

Specific Feedback

How do you like the lateral view?

Jim: Now you’re just showing off! What a beautiful flower superbly captured and rendered. Keep 'em coming..=))>

Fantastic photograph, Jim! Rather than a suggestion I have a question: how did you accomplish the black background which so well sets up the flower? It looks amazing. Any thoughts you have are sincerely appreciated.

Thank you @Bill_Fach and @tom.marin for your critiques. @tom.marin , I use a portable light box made by Cowboy Studio that has different colors of velvet backgrounds that attach with velcro to the back of the box. I deliberately set the Z9 to slightly under-expose the flower and maintain the black BG. Adjusting the highlights, shadows, and overall exposure will push the background away from black. So as a final step, I use the black eyedropper in Levels in Photoshop to set the blackpoint of the BG. Hope that helps…Jim

Very cool process, Jim! Thank you for sharing… Tom

That is an incredibly beautiful portrait, Jim. The colors are sensational.

Another beautiful Dahlia image, Jim. Thanks for talking about your process on this one. It’s helpful. You should head for Seattle in February and take in the annual Flower and Garden show. The Dahlia dealers have incredible selections.
