Second Wave--eroded rocks above The Wave, Utah

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I spent the day photographing in the surreal formations of The Wave, then wandered further up to discover this amazing scene. Back home, I felt that it would work best in B&W to emphasize the curves of the weathered rock.

Hi @patrick1 , Thank you for sharing this wonderful image with us. I really love the detail and textures you have captured. Your choice of vantage point really shows off these attributes. Well seen and processed.

Thank you, Guy. It’s a magical place. Thankfully the rangers restrict the number of entries, and we were lucky enough to get one.

Great idea Patrick to depart from the usual color shots of this place. I like the image but will offer that what might have been a strong “subject” – the butte in upper left – could stand to be taller in the frame, which I assume is something you could have controlled with a different angle. Also, the black sky is a bit distracting to me, making this image more an abstract than a landscape. Regardless, I really like looking at it.

Thanks, James. Yes, I thought that colour might distract somewhat from the patterns and texture, and that B&W would add more drama. Good thought about the angle. I shot a lot at this location so will look to see if I have another where the height is more emphasized.

Patrick, the sweeping flow and textures in the rocks stand out well in b&w. I wonder about the fully black “sky”, but am not sure that anything different is possible or would work as well as what’s here.

Would love to see how you handled this opportunity Mark. Meanwhile, don’t tell anyone about our “secret” window.
Will try some black and whites as well.

Great Image. I really like the Tone and Lines in this image The black sky works great !!!

Thanks, Gill!

Stunning! The lines are so sensual and the black and white really emphasize them. I wonder if the blacks might be a little strong in some areas, though. But, really woncerful.

Thank you, Chris!
