Short-Eared Owl Staredown

New Version (Straightened image and took away saturation under right wing)

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

My primary goal on this trip was to capture a short-eared owl looking at me. On two previous trips to the park I saw several owls flying, but they were always too far away. Based on my observations of their flight patterns I decided to try a new location. I definitely achieved my goal, but I did need to do a rather heavy crop to achieve the image I wanted.

Specific Feedback

I did very simple processing on this image, but I would love to get any feedback on my crop or any suggestions on my processing of this image.

Good capture Willem. You have the yellow stare and have also captured both the top and underside of the wings which is nice.
The sun is very strong from the left side and has a warming effect on the owl. This is presumably because you were shooting just before sunset, I might consider toning this down very slightly to have a little less yellow and a bit more white on the bird.
I like the tall grasses but the top of the frame is a little bare and quite bright. Maybe you could try cropping a bit down from the top and also taking down the highlights in the sky to balance the top and bottom of the frame a little more

Hi Willem. A nice shot of the Short-eared Owl. I like the head-on pose. I agree with Ryan that the evening golden hour is a bit much on the sunny side of the bird. Also, unless this was a hill side it looks like your horizon is a bit tilted.

Thank you @Ryan_H and @Dennis_Plank! Your feedback is great. I will attempt to put out an improved version in the next few days.

Hi Willem, nice job on the repost with the straighter horizon and the light seems a bit tamer overall. Nice head on catch - love seeing these birds hunting over their fields. Nice frame.

Yes, the repost looks a lot better. I think you’ve made some appropriate changes. The lighting is a little less overwhelming with the adjust in saturation.

Nice image.
