Smokin Hot Rocks

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is a view of one of the thermal areas at Steamboat Point, on the edge of Yellowstone Lake a couple of days after a small snow storm. I was intrigued by the steep slope, the heavy mist and the rocks against the cold water of the lake.

Specific Feedback

Does the hot/cold comparison come through?

Technical Details

R5, 100-500 @ 200, 1/250 s, f/16, iso 800, tripod.

Jim, almost looks like an emerging dragon protruding out of the steam here. The steam between the dabs of snow and the cold water lake also gives a sauna feel going on there too… :dragon:

Yes, although the hot part dominates to my eye.

The diagonal flow works well, and the outcrop of rock is an eye-catching subject. I’m not sure the left side of the image is carrying its weight, and could see cropping some of that off.

Interesting image Mark. I am waiting on a dragon’s head to pop out of the rising steam! In answer to your question; yes the relationship of hot/cold does come through. The diagonals work very nicely as does the color palette in this scene. My only suggestion would be a small crop from the left side. I think that would place more of an emphasis on the effect you were going for. I hope you do not mind, but there is a rework with what I was thinking.

Mark: My first impression was, “too much lake”. I could see a tighter crop and maybe turn the camera more to the right. Must have been a neat experience to view and it does convey the temperature contrast very well. >=))>
