Smoky Cape lighthouse NSW taken from the next headland to the North, about 1,2 Km distant.
An evening photo, taken not long before the sun disappeared behind the hills. The aspect ratio is 21 by 9. Should I go to Xpan, however this removes the lighted trees on the rh lower corner. This lighthouse is now fully automated and the keepers’ cottages are available for hire.
How can I improve this photo? This is now V2 as the original was too dark

Hi Rob. I like the composition and the lighting in this image. The keepers’ houses are a really nice inclusion and create a good flow up to the lighthouse. I took the liberty of downloading the image and circling a few areas that for me could go away, if you’re into that sort of thing. The two main ones are parts of the railing along the access road. The main section in front of the houses works well but the part on the far right and that one bright post to the left of the houses just grab my eyes and won’t let go. Other than that, I might try to pull down the brightest whites on the structures just a bit. It’s a fine image.
Dennis, thank you. The extra piece of railing did bother me and I think the bottom pieces crept in when I re cropped from 2:1 down to 21:9. I had not noticed the white post and now it annoys me too. I think the issue is … more care needs to be taken!
Thanks again. @Dennis_Plank
Sorry to take so long getting back to this, Rob, it’s been a busy week. I like what you did to minimize the distractions. I kind of prefer the original crop, but I can see the reason for cropping up past the bright areas in the lower left. An alternative might be to just subdue that area a bit as I don’t find it a serious distraction and the taller crop gives a better feel of the bluff where the lighthouse sits.
Thanks for your help. I have played a fair bit with this photo, including the 3:1 attached and I am wondering if the real problem is sense of depth. The photo was taken at about a 45 deg angle to the road between the houses and lighthouse, but from a distance of about 1,2Km which will flatten any perspective. Add this to a bland and formless sky and I have a flat image. This is particularly noticeable between the attached photo and the second photo of same subject. Both photos have the same bland sky, same focal length but the second is taken from 250m away
