Snow Flurry

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

It doesn’t snow very often here in northern Germany, so when it does, you should grab your camera and head outside. I was interested in the structure of these trees, and by changing the white balance, I was able to bring out the textures and the falling snow even more. The challenge was framing the branches correctly—what do you think?

Framing looks great to me. You’ve filled the frame up with the two large trees and the branches fanning out in all directions works really well. Nicely done.

Hi Stephanie,
This image is lovely; you certainly made the most of the snow event IMO. I agree with my brother @Michael_Lowe that the framing looks great as the trees fill up the frame beautifully. The trees themselves have a lot of character and I like the fact that some snow is covering the limbs. My only suggestion; just my personal preference rather than a critique; would be to reduce the cyan somewhat. I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking. This is just my opinion of course as I see that you mentioned that you changed the white balance. You captured a magical moment!

Hi Ed, thank you very much. This is a really good proposal. I like your rework very much

A lovely image!! The framing looks fine to me. I’m not sure why, but @Ed_Lowe’s rework feels like it brings out more detail in the trees. Lovely in any case, and congratulations on the EP!!

Thanks Diane, in my mind during every phase of photography, I have a certain white balance in mind during development. I also really like Ed’s suggestion.

Wonderful shot Stephanie! I love images taken while it’s still snowing, they seem to get an impressionistic vibe to them, which I like. I think you did a great job with the branches, there’s no extraneous limbs popping into or out of the edges. My only comment is it seems to have a slight blue or cyan tint to it and I think it may be good to try to adjust the color balance to get it back to a truer white. I love the nice combination of the bigger, darker trunks and limbs and the more lace-like smaller branches, very well done!

Hello Scott, thank you very much for your review. In this case, the white balance was deliberately chosen

Dear Stephanie Hartlage, thanks for sharing. I find canopies and their relationships very interesting, especially during winter, as in this image, because the graphical qualities of their leafless branches stand out. What I think work particularly well in this image is the lines of conversion and intersection between the branches of the two trees, but also the depth created by the tonal contrast between the darker trunks in the foreground and the tightly textured mass of branches and twigs in the receding background.

Good morning Leo!

Thank you very much for your detailed comment. I’m glad you like the picture so much.
