Snow Hummer

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I woke up this morning with an unexpected inch of snow on the ground. I couldn’t wait to jump up and see what bird possibilities I might catch. For some reason we are having a huge influx of hummingbirds to our feeder ( I estimate that at least 20 were on, or wanting to be on our feeder while ago!). I tiptoed out onto our deck to try for some perched birds in our nearby liquid amber tree which is a favorite haunt for the hummers to sit, and guard the feeder. Sure enough I had lots of opportunities. It was a challenge though. What with the frenzy going on at the feeder, the ones perching were hardly there more than a second or two. I did manage to get some shots even thought light was still very dim still.

Specific Feedback

Cropping? I decided to let its head direction win over its body direction with my crop. I probably broke some kinda rule in doing that. It is a busy BG… historically accurate, though. Lots of snow, lots of snowy branches and twigs.

The crop works fine for me, Dave. The head turn makes it work nicely. I love the little clump of ice on the bud at the branch tip. You might try bringing up the shadows a bit to brighten the hummer or just select it and brighten it a trifle.

HI Dave
Hummingbirds in the snow, what a great opportunity and change. I think the ice played with the exposure on the Z9. I agree with Dennis’s comments.
