SnowBall

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

My usual walk in the park. I saw this contrast shot and took a few images. Decided to focus on the Snowball and a little softer on BG. Some noise but i am working on that editing technique. I like the colors in this image. Didn’t work in B&W …

Specific Feedback

Maybe not use the DOF ideas to focus on the Snowball.. Maybe sharp on the whole image. But that was my vision… Some noise. Bright sunny day and had to do some burning in the Snowball.

but different for me. I am stretching out some and do some nature color photography.

Technical Details

ISO 800 shutter 1000 f11 edit in RAW and Photoshop

The array of multi-colored leaves in the upper half are doing a good job of trying to steal the show from the wonderful blossoms in this image, Gill. Sometimes that’s bad , but I think it works in this image. Not knowing what was on the edges, I think this could be a touch wider to get the full width of the cluster. Very well seen and a nice job of execution.

Thanks. Kept the leaves a little soft. I wanted the focus on the SnowBall plant. Kinda keep the BG just colorful and support the Foreground. Could have framed a little wider but I felt I would lose the detail in the Snowball. Lots of burning in this image.

Thanks again for showing interest.
And all the information you have given me.

Gill: I love the color palette/contrast and I especially like the leaves. With regard to @Dennis_Plank comment regarding more room I generally agree but one could also remedy the situation with a tighter crop. I generally like to give petal/leaf edges adequate room or crop them so that the cropping is implied as intentional. Touching the edge of the frame can often be perceived as a mistake (of course that applies only if you give a rip about convention). I cropped this tighter which I think gives both the main snowball and the leaves a bit more prominence. Back to you. >=))>

Nice idea to crop it tighter @Bill_Fach

Tighter crop works great. Hanging things off the side has become a style for me I guess. Thanks for showing interest.

Edward Weston cropped tight on some of his images. Hanging them off the borders or edge. Maybe that’s where I got that from. I really don’t play by the rules. Photography for me is fun and creative outlet. With my music as one package.

All ways learning and trying different things. Looking at 10mm lens to start landscape image ideas.

Gil, the Snowball bloom is the star of this show. It is complemented very well by the nice sharp leaves below. The colors in the leaves above also complement the flower as they add considerable extra interest. Both the original post and Bill’s crop look very good.

Thanks so much. Simple image. Just walk in the park. Always something to photograph.

I really love the mix of colors and textures in this one Gil. I’m OK with a tighter crop, but don’t really feel that it is necessary.

Wow. Thanks so Much. Tighter crop shows more detail.
