Snowy Mammoth

One benefit of a cold snowy fall in Montana, was getting to see Yellowstone showing off it’s winter scenes. On this cold morning after a snowstorm, there were a few hardy souls on the boardwalk down to the Canary Springs overlook. I was attracted to the snowy scene and the turquoise color in Canary Springs. (5D3, 100-400 @ 100 mm, 1/320 s, f/16, iso 400, tripod)

Beautiful image, it looks magical.

A beautiful winter scene, Mark. I could even see using this on a Christmas card. I am loving all of the lines in it, the steam and the snow covered trees. The people in it are a nice addition. Outstanding!

A real nice and inviting winter scene. I like the way the comp pulls me through and finally drops me off at some fine wintery mountains, entertaining me along the way.

Wow complex but cohesive composition that works very well and makes you explore the image. I am confused by the cyan area upper 1/3 is that an odd color cast or is something happening over there to cause it. I am vaguely aware Yellowstone has these colourful hot pools.

Great, your image brings me back to my skiing days.!!

Mark, Yes, this is a snowy wonderland. The fences add nice visual flow to the composition. I too like the turquoise. From my recollection of Yellowstone years ago, it looks like the color of sulphurize water from the steamy springs. It also hugs the sides of the trail heading toward the springs in the background. I took the liberty of cropping out the LRC as I thought it might distract a bit from the image. What do you think of the crop?

@Ben_van_der_Sande’s words about skiing is true for me, too. And I am quite fond of skiing. The crop that @Larry_Greenbaum suggested works really well. Removing that triangle on the LRC is subtle but very effective!

Beautiful shot! Some folks stole my thunder: Magical…belongs on a Christmas card!

Mark,

Beautiful winter scenic. I really like how you’ve managed to incorporate/include the walkway/path/fencing and the human element. The patch of turquoise is a real gem here.

I like the compact composition. At the same time though I’m wondering what’s outside the frames and if there is a more wider, inclusive view. But I’m quite enjoying this one as presented.

Beautiful. Shirley mentions the inclusion of people as nice addition and I do agree for this particular scene, but the lack of people is what really appeals to me (compared to other times of the year). When we had family living in Bozeman we visited a lot but have not returned for several years. I must do so.

Mark, I’ve only been to Yellowstone in summer, so it’s a real treat to see the Mammoth terraces in these conditions. The people not only add scale, but by having two groups of people they help pull your eye through the scene too. I also like how you have arranged the trees, they do a nice job of balancing the composition. I like the rework done by @Larry_Greenbaum, the tweak to the LRC is subtle but really helps a lot.

Mark,
Late to the pre-New Year’s party but I had to stop by and echo many of the others comments. This for me is a classic Christmas card scene and a brilliant use of the fence!

Very well done and it makes me want to schedule a trip to Yellowstone in the winter!
