Winter is slowly setting in…and light is getting sweeter. Last couple of years, I have not been able to get these kind of spider web Iridescence. Tried some today, though not perfect.

Wow, Balan, that is some very interesting light. I like all of the different colors. I also like the spider’s larger than life shadow. I wish I could see the face of the spider more, it just seems a bit dark. The composition and light works for me. Being able to see the light on the web is a nice bonus.
Balan: This is spectacular IMO! Great light on the web and the shadow is icing on the cake. Most excellent.>=))>
Balan, getting lots of colors in a web like this is very hard. This looks great, especially with the spider’s shadow. You’ve got excellent color in the oof web.
I knew this was yours, Balan. No one does these kinds of photos like you! It is amazing and fills the viewer with wonder. The spider is so sharp and the rest just dazzles. Would you mind sharing how you do this, besides with an enormous supply of patience?
Kathy .many thanks for your kind words. In fact Mark Seaver has done these kind of images too. All of us know of the single strand of spider web that throws out the iridescence. You need the sun to be striking it at about 45 to approx 60 degree angle.
Not all webs can throw this sort of color and iridescence. There is something to do with the wetness in the web too, I guess.
I have seen webs at the same place at the same time, when one has iridescence and the other does not.
During winters here in South India, the morning sun hits us at an angle, due to the suns migration south. Thats the only time when i come across this.
I use a 180 macro lens, get closer and and shoot at between 6.3 and 8 ( this time I used F10) that brings about a out of focus web in the foreground.
In the past three years or so …I really may have got about 10 presentable images, even through I have looked at a couple of hundred spider webs.,
In my next post I will share the picture of the whole web, from where I got close.
Thanks Mark, I have left a reply for Kathy as well , for this image.
Great display of dazzling colors and light, almost kaleidoscopic. The shadow is amazing. Wonder where the shadow is falling on - on the web or something else?
This is an incredibly creative and beautiful photo! Never thought I’d say that about an insect photo but this is really great.
Haha! I knew this was yours… excellent image, Balan, top notch!
