This image was taken in a local park, here in the DC area, during early spring. I’ve been collecting images of trees with early spring color. This one has the color, but also the chaotic feeling of the woodland.

Maybe too chaotic? Woodland pictures are always a challenge for me, but also one of the subjects, as an East Coaster, that I have the most access to.

Will: Frame filing fantastic IMO. I love the color palette and the stages of the leaf growth allowing the trunk and branches to show prominently is just right. I feel your trepidation regarding scenes like this but I think you carried it off very well. >=))>
Hi Will,
Not to chaotic for me. I love these early spring images when the leaves are starting to emerge, but you can still get a glimpse of the rest of the surrounding trees and their varying shapes. The main tree is wonderful as are the soft subdued reds and yellows in the scene. I am thinking an alternative crop would work as well. IMO a crop from the top would place more of an emphasis on the main tree along with those delicate yellow leaves . I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking. Just my opinion of course as this is quite lovely as posted. Beautiful scene.
Will, this looks great to me. I like how the dark tree trunk centers the view and then is surrounded by the early spring colors. This does a good job of “telling the story” about spring in an Eastern forest.
Will: As to chaotic: I think chaotic is the point, so well captured. I might crop a bit from the top to keep the focus on the tree’s strong form; and might try to bump up the contrast a bit to make the strong tree elements more prominent. The color is good: I Japan, there’s a whole “thing” about the early spring colors–shinryoku (surely misspelled), and people travel to the Kyoto gardens to see it
