This works beautifully for my taste, Xavier. Funny description of the photography-my wife is always talking about me getting down flat on the ground. For a lot of flowers it’s the best angle.
The main blossom and its “echo” are set off wonderfully by the out of focus flowers in the foreground/background. Great control of the depth of field to pull this image off.
When I see a photo like this I tell myself I must try harder for beauty and not just realism in macro. Sharp focus on one small area often achieves this - and you show this here. The dark upper corners pulled my eyes a bit, so they might be lightened. But it’s a very interesting and attractive shot.
I like this, Xavier. I too need to try for shots like this. Getting down on the stomach isn’t nearly as hard as getting up anymore. Old knees. I like the “echo” of the subject in the oof flowers. Well done.
I don’t think you over did it! It works for me! I love the feel of movement in the background blurry flowers, and wonder if a bit of a crop in from the upper corners would accentuate the in-focus flower and its chorus in the background.
Either way, lovely image!
Xavier: I really like shallow DOF shots like this. Some years ago we used to call this cramming as one would cram the lens into the FG and blur everything but one small element. For me the aspect ratio is a bit awkward. Cropping this from the right to near 5x4 would suit me better. Marvelous subject and your technique is very well done. >=))>
Thank you very much to everybody who wrote about this picture. I will heed the cropping more advice in the future and will try to accomplish this in camera. I totally agree with the dark corners being too obtrusive. I am enjoying myself with some bird pictures right now, but will make a point of improving this picture one of these days.
Personally I like the original 3:2 ratio best. Not just because it’s a ratio that I find naturally easy to view, but also because the image is more ‘finished’ this way, as regards the flowers being in the shot in full, rather than cut off. Maybe you could vignet the photo a bit, if viewers (or you) find the top right blue corner distracting. Nice shot!=
