Spring Tulips

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

These tulips were in a pot in front of my kitchen window. I didn’t want to move it because I liked the positioning and gesture of the flowers, and it would be difficult to reposition in the same way. And I used my iPhone to photograph it because of the difficulty of the angle and an oven in the way.

Specific Feedback

Does the gesture of the plant work? The black & white conversion? It’s not my usual technique since most of my black & white work is high contrast, but I think it works in this case.

This is simply gorgeous!! The high-key works., with enough tonal detail to keep anyone happy! And it is a wonderful gesture – I’m glad you didn’t try to change it as things like that are never the same when you move it and try to re-create it.

I have the same iPhone and haven’t managed to do anything worthwhile with it. Homework…

Hi Susanna,
Well done! I agree with Diane. I can imagine an even more high key treatment, but I love how this looks almost like a pencil drawing.

Good call on not moving it. That foliage is special!

Splendid “pencil drawing”. I like the B&W, the composition, the two parallel tulips mirroring each other, and the background. Nothing to add, beautiful image!

Beautifully done, Susanna. The tulips look so transparent and I think the density of the leaves works very well. It’s definitely not a scene for high contrast.

Susanna: I wanted to add to the kudos on this fine image. The lower contrast really suits the subject well. The posture of the flowers flowing left to right works nicely as well. Overall a superbly crafted image. >=))>

Really excellent. I can’t add much original thought or opinion, but wanted to say it’s so beautiful and a tiny bit sad…sort of ethereal, too.

Thanks so much @Diane_Miller, @Antonello_Provenzale, @Bill_Fach, @Marylynne_Diggs, @Kris_Smith, and @Dennis_Plank for your comments! Tulips always seem to offer us wonderful photo ops! I forgot to mention that I processed it in Photoshop and converted it to B&W in Nik Silver Efex.

Wow, looks like a painting! Really nice B&W treatment. Love the translucent flowers and soft edges.
