Stala... ice?

Image(s)

Image Description

Just about a year ago I was out photographing ice that had formed along waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge. This ice had formed along the edge of the roadway just east of the bridge over Multnomah Creek. It was unique for its yellow color; I’m assuming it was water that had leached through the soil or detritus? It reminded me of some of the stalactites and stalagmites I have seen in caves.

The ice on these cuts through rock is always facinating. I notice they form best on north-facing cuts not exposed to sunlight and can keep growing all winter. I bet there is some great macro opportunity in these formations.

You nicely captured some mature formations. I believe the color can come from minerals leached from the rock as well as from the roadside environment.

Have you tried B&W conversion?

John, this do look like stalactites, with some jellyfish characteristics as an extra. The dark “line” towards the left catches my eyes, so I wonder about dodging it or even cropping it out.

I like this one, John. The shapes are very interesting.

I also found my eye drawn to the dark area on the left. I tried cropping it out and also straightened the image vertically. While I was at it, I reduced the yellow cast. Just possibilities to consider.

What a wonderful macro / closeup playground – a target-rich environment! I like what @Don_Peters did, both the crop and the straightening. The shapes with the textures on the rounded tops remind me of cauliflower. Somewhere between very cool and really cold!

What a fun place to explore! Zooming in on some of these areas turns it into an otherworldly abstract. Some remind me of jellyfish!
