Stare Down

Repost copied to top for purpose of Editor’s Pick

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I have been more interested in the high key look to my bird photos lately. The blank sky worked well to create that look in this image. I just happened to spot this Red Tailed Hawk up on this post just outside of Malheur NWR in Oregon. As I got closer I noticed it devouring its prey, and the look it gave me was like saying “stay away, this one is mine”. I like the way the bird is isolated since there is nothing in the background to distract from it.

Specific Feedback

General feedback would be welcome. What feeling do you get from the look the hawk is giving? Thanks for looking.

Ted

Really nice catch of this hawk. I’m pretty amazed at how sharp and smooth it is. Looks like you were pretty close or had a long lens. I can’t quite make out what the pray is in the claw.
I think the high key effect works in this image quite well.
Malheur there is a really nice area for photographing. I live in Olympia so this is about a six or 7 Hour drive for me. So. I have only been there one time.

Hi Ted, that is one intense look from the hawk. I get the feeling this bird does not want to be messed with. Very nice catch. The details look good throughout with the f16. The prey adds another element of interest. The high key looks good to me but I could see more room on top and bottom especially on top.

Great pose and action, Ted. I would agree on some more room on top. I could also see lightening or bringing up the shadows on the hawk.

A very nice capture! The white sky works well and the shadows look OK to me, and the NR and sharpness look good. I also vote for more canvas top and bottom.

Thank you @David_Schoen @Allen_Sparks @Dennis_Plank and @Diane_Miller for your comments and suggestions. I went back and added some more space at the top and bottom of the images as recommended by some of you.

Nice repost Ted. Much better I think.

Thanks Allen. I think it’s an improvement.

What a shot, Ted. He is really giving you the stare! Don’t even think about stealing his lunch! I like the repost. Nice.

Thanks Shirley. It was a good wildlife moment.

Ted: high key causes the bird to be perfectly appreciated. Have to love the fiereceness of the stares that raptors give. Congrats on the EP.
