Description
We regularly see these fine looking jays in our yard. Here’s a brief pose I got of one yesterday.
Specific Feedback
Square cropping okay? Too much white in BG?

I like the up and down branch that it’s perched, that an interesting leadin. The bird look good and shows nice detail. You can easily burn-in the brighter parts, but they do suggest a fine sunny day.
Nice pose with the typical Steller’s Jay head tilt, Dave. I do think I’d get rid of some of the brighter white out of focus branches. It shouldn’t be hard to select the background in this one and either use low opacity cloning or just pick one of the green tones and paint some blotches over the brighter areas, then pick another and do the same. I’ll usually use about 50% opacity and 50% flow and do more or less random splotches until I like the background.
Thanks for this. Sounds worth a try.
Once you’ve done it a few times, it becomes pretty easy. The trick is to get a really good selection of the subject and either copy it to another layer or invert the selection. The new subject selection tool in PS is the best they’ve ever had, but it sometimes doesn’t want to select something that you want it to and you have to use the older tools.
