Sunrise in Maine

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was early morning on the coast of Maine, where sand, shells, wood, and seaweed are constantly being sculpted by water. I love the constant change, as the tides rise and fall, and as the sun comes and goes.

Specific Feedback

I’m wondering if this might benefit from a significant crop, so that only the sand would be visible, not the water or sun in the background.

Elizabeth, the sun’s low angle does a good job of showing off the details of the beach with it’s mix of sand, stone, shells, seaweed and debris. I think you have a couple of possible crops. Just the skyline, leaves the sunstreak, which helps tell about the time of day and location. All of the water, limiting the story to only the textures of the beach.

Hi Elizabeth,
The light is quite nice in this scene and I think I see what you were going for. I like walking along the beach so this has a serene peaceful vibe for me. I agree with your thoughts on a crop so as to place more of a focus on those constant changes you said you loved. I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking. I tried to remove some of the OOF areas. If you have the opportunity to do again I would consider using a larger f stop to get all of the FG in focus, Just my opinion of course. Where in Maine did you capture this? I am used to seeing cobble stones and granite.
