Sunset Rays Gollanfield

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Gollanfield, Nairn, Scotland.

As the sun set behind the Scots Pine copse seated upon a grassy cnoc on open farm land, the contrast levels dropped shooting directly into the light permitting considerably improved shadow detail and thence displaying some orange inverted crepuscular rays emanating from the last vestiges of sunset scattered in a diverging fan of light through the clouds above descending rays of light from lens flare courtesy of the small aperture used. A serendipitous moment where lens flare arguably adds something to the shot.

A lovely grand view Ian; it looks like a coronation for the trees. Wonderful color mixed in there too, and that’s a great job of controlling tough lighting.

With that in mind though, twas mine I might teak it just a little by dropping the contrast/luminance of the land a tad and adding back in just a trace of detail in the trees. As always, YMMV.

Beautiful. My only suggestions would have been along the lines of @John_Williams At least for the trees.

Ian,

Most glorious with a bit of serendipity tossed in…

This takes me back to the discussion of what makes photographers migrate from the grand scenic to more intimat nature images… Well, I’m reminded because for many, including myself, it has always been these glorious moments in time… grand sunsets and sunrises, where color abound and we can help ourselves in loving these moments. So yeah, the grand scenic, it seems to me, is where it started for many of us. Of course to this day, I will always love and appreciate moments like this. Your image brings that out for me in spades.

From a nitpicky point of view, the two small lines of trees on both edges pull my eye a bit, or at least take away from the overall moment I want to experience. The small trees on the left, it’s mostly their rounded shapes, and the treeline on the right, matches the contrast/black level as the main grove of trees, which is also slightly an eye magnet. Not a big deal really, but I thought I would try to address; on the left, a slight crop and cloned a remaining tree. On the right, also shaved a bit off the side, but also targeted the dark line of trees and reduce the blacks which brings them closer to the surrounding environs, in terms of some slight atmospheric haze.

Other than those minor points, this is indeed quite glorious.
