Swainson's Thrush

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

We went to Cape Disappointment State Park for a few days this week and on a morning walk in a nicely birdy area this thrush posed very nicely. Unfortunately the trail was uphill at this point and it was on a branch immediately over the trail so I had no choice but to shoot up at it.

Specific Feedback

The greenish tinge on the belly is reflection from leaves below it. Knowing where it comes from, it doesn’t bother me much, but I’d like to know if others react differently.

I know where that greenish glow comes from, so am not bothered by it. The canopy does this to everything. I like the vulnerability I get from the belly exposure. Nice markings there and you got a catchlight so not all is lost. The touch of moss hanging is nice, too. The big branch over its head is a pain, but what can you do? Nice catch.

Hi Dennis,
Fine catch of this thrush with a nice pose and catchlight as Kris mentions. The framing of the branching doesn’t really bother me and the moss is a nice element of interest.

Nice composition. The framing works well and it cooperative enough to give you a head turn. Larger image has good detail.

I would tone down the saturation of the leaves in the BG and reduce the green color cast on the thrush. Comp is fine and I would brighten up the thrush too,Jim
