A few minor adjustments that included desaturating yellows and greens (maybe too much?) I would like to keep the early morning feel.) A little bit of gardening and rock painting.
The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
This little 'roo is a Swamp Wallaby. They are fairly common on the east coast of Australia, but they are very timid. I was sitting on the bank trying to get some shots of a scrubwren when this little girl came down for a drink. Despite big, beautiful eyes, macropods are quite blind in daylight and rely on their sense of smell and hearing. This little one certainly knew I was close. I think her apprehension shows.

I usually only hear the “thump Thump” as they disappear! I like the rim lighting on the animal itself but feel the bright lighting on the rhs corner rock and the bright piece of rock above it pulls the eye away from the subject. I also like the space the wobbly looks into - in spite of being behind. She has clearly heard something, as shown by the attitude of her ears. Could the bright grass stalks be dimmed out - I think this needs playing with to see if it improves the photo or not. Depth of field is great.
Really nice shot! I love the rim light on the wallaby. I also liked the original colors. The darkening works though on the highlighted spots. I’d probably just combine a few tweaks from each edit.
Beautiful pose and rim light here. Somehow I like the original post. You may tone down the corner rock and have some blues in the shadows. The frame may benefit from the vignette.
I got behind here and just now found this. I think it’s lovely and your tweaks are good ones. You dealt with the corner rock well. Maybe a slight further tweak would be some slight desaturation and darkening of the bright grass around it. So nice to be able to get a shot like this!
Glennys, your “latest rework” is very much what I saw in the photo. Maybe increasing the overall exposure of the image just a touch could help, that is a great photo.
Thank you everyone! Slight vignette added, corner rock darkened. The idea of toning down the brighter grasses is good, but I’ve decided to keep it as is. It is naturally lime green and wanted to keep the early morning feel.
I’m way behind here. I really like this image overall. Like others, the rim lighting is very nice. The components all work for me, but I think I would use a light subject mask to lift the wallaby by about +1, maybe +2, or add a subtle vignette to isolate the subject just a touch.
