Image Description

This very tiny cactus upstart was being sheltered by this rock collection helping aid the plant with the smallest amount of rainfall runoff in this desert region.
I had a recent photo with larger versions of this similar cactus and did not know it’s formal or common name. After a suggestion by Dennis Plank of using Google Image ID I tried it and it came up with the formal name of Mammillaria cactus or common names of Pillow or Pin Cushion. It showed a 72% ID verification so I’ll run with that at this point unless others have a better idea.

Paul: Another great find. I love all the disparate textures and the overall color palette. The centered subject works for me, especially with the little red protuberances around the cactus. My only small nit is the soft focus in the LLC. That did catch my eye a bit but certainly not a deal breaker. And oh Velvia, I will always love you. >=))>

@Bill_Fach your point was spot on… :+1:
That must have been a pretty deep drop there and I should have used a bit more DOF. I spent a small amount of time on it and hopefully not quite the eye draw maybe?.. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Paul, this is a fine look at this little cactus nestled so thoroughly in all the rocks. The red buds are a special addition. I’m fine with the softness in the llc. My eyes spend very little time exploring that area, while the variety of colors in the rocks and (of course) the cacti are well worth exploring.

Paul, what a compelling story. Furthermore, I find the composition very balanced and appealing.

I like that little guy, Paul. The color and contrast look great. The LLC in the OP didn’t bother me, but the rework is better.

Just a thought: How about cropping from the top to eliminate that clump of vegetation in the URC? It’s an eye grabber for me. Other than that small item, this works a treat.

Thanks for the additional idea here…

I did miss this one, Paul. A beautiful image ofthis tiny cactus. It’s amazing how they bloom when they’re still so tiny. I love the setting and your back story. Glad the ID idea seems to work here. I’d give long odds that somewhere on the web is a dedicated cactus ID site.
