Description

Machias Seal Island is around 10 miles off the cost of Maine and is run by the Canada’s, but the USA also lays claim to the Island. Our day was spent in a heave fog (200 feet visible) and we were lucky to get on the Island. Only 16 people are allowed on the Island, so we were divided into four groups and given stick to raze over are head to help reduce the impact of the greeting by the smaller Arctic Turn population. After clearing the Terns section the island we enter the blinds for a hour of photographing.
“Machias Seal Island is the home to one of the most southerly colonies of the atlantic puffin (well over 1000 pairs), whose breeding range extends north all the way to Greenland. The other member of the auk family that nests on Machias Seal Island is the razorbill. It is larger than the atlantic puffin, with immaculate black and white plumage and a distinctive white ring around its bill. Approximately 100 pairs of razorbill nest on the island.
At one time the most numerous birds on the island were arctic and common terns. However, the number of birds nesting here has declined due to, among other factors, the reduced availability of food around the island.”Government of Canada

I really like the interactions you caught in these images, Peter. The first one is probably my favorite for the action, but I sure wish that out of focus foreground rock would go away. The second really fits with the first to tell a story (probably not true) and I really like their perch on that one. The third also provides some interesting interaction, though I don’t think it’s as strong as the first two. Nice job and it sounds like a good excursion.

Sounds like a great trip!! I LOVE the second one. It’s like, “I am SOOO out of here!”

Hi Dennis & Diane
Thank you for your comments. When your in the blind the Puffins and Razorbills are as close as two feet from the outside of the blind and one of the problems is the birds keep photo bombing you. I get a shot setup and a Puffin or Razorbill would walk in front of the camera. (even with the photo bombing I managed to crank out 358 good to very good photographs)
Peter
Ps
I re-cropped the first photograph.
