Hi Folks,
I wanted to share this photo here as it’s not presented for critique, just an interesting item on how the folks at the Portland Japanese Garden protect some of the garden’s irreplaceable trees. I’m sure some of you have seen this before, but it was new to me as I rarely go in the winter. They had photographer Stu Levy giving a talk Wednesday, so I went to see what else was happening.
They install posts with strings tethering the trees to the ground and in some cases supporting the branches. They also put a protective layer on the grass in the flat garden.
Several dwarf pines, weeping cherries, and japanese maples have these “maypole” looking structures. It’s not particularly photogenic in this state, but I’m sure someone could have fun with it.
