The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This growth, about 1.5 cm across, was seen alone on an empty wall yesterday, crying out for me to revisit it in a few years. Just hang on in there!

Specific Feedback

Should I darken the pale parts a bit? The histogram was OK.

Technical Details

Olympus OM-1 + 60mm macro 1/60 f 4 ISO 200 Diffused flash on camera
11 shot stack - DMap in Zerene

Adjusted tonalities in PS and cropped for composition.

OMG this is so completely wonderful. What a perfect little lichen-y rosette. The square crop is the best choice here - architectural details featuring rosettes are often framed in squares. Nice texture in the wall and the contrast works well. With regard to the lichen itself, you could try selecting it and throwing a curve on it to improve the separation in the shades. Either that or the Point Color tool may work as well. I wouldn’t bring the lightness down too much though since I know its pretty silvery and might get muddy and gray if you push the pixels too hard. If you ever go back and look at it again, I’d love to see how it progresses. Lichens are pioneers in nature and are often the first organisms to colonize bare rock or burned trees…or concrete walls!

Wonderful!! Would be interesting to tweak tonalities a bit to try for a touch more tonal detail in the lichens. Probably with a mask, to keep from bringing up more detail in the BG. Make this an annual visit and post the previous ones after the new one, for comparison!

Very nice find, Mike. I like your presentation. You’re the one who saw this, so you know what the lighter areas looked like. If they’re accurate, I’d leave them alone. If not, the point color tool is a wonderful way of tweaking when combined with a mask.

@Dennis_Plank @Kris_Smith @Diane_Miller . Many thanks; as my version of Lightroom is No 5, I don’t think I have the Point Color Tool, so I followed Kris’s advice, did a selection and a very gentle curve. This also darkened the greens a bit and I think I prefer the repost above. First note to self: annual return to wall. Second note to self: there’s a wall, so it should’ve gone to Everything Else. Sorry!
