I grew up in Indiana but one of my grandmothers lived in Yachats, Oregon. From the time I was a little boy until now I go back to the coast as often as I can. One of the coastal features just south of Yachats in the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area is Thor’s Well. I have many images of the well taken from the observation deck and from down on the rocks themselves but I was never fully satisfied. On my trip in October 2023 I went there for the first time with a drone and spent the better part of a morning flying and shooting. The wave action was thoroughly compelling and mesmerizing as I watched the well fill and drain. This is my favorite directly overhead shot as the well drained. >=))>

The camera on the Mini 3 Pro is a fixed f1.7 aperture so the only way to effect SS is with ISO and/or ND filters. I’m not sure of the strength of the ND filter I used but I do like the effect of the SS on how the water was rendered. Your thoughts?
What a fantastic way to see this thing! The detail is wonderful and the composition shows the dynamic movement of the water. I think I remember you posted a video a while back…
Bill, I remember this view. It’s very nicely dramatic and well composed. I’d say you got the ss right with a mix of strong splashing and good flow structure.
I’ve never seen a top down view of Thor’s Well. A lot safer than walking out to it. It’s hard to tell how big this really is from this aerial view. I love the feathery details of the water. Something about this image makes me think of a flower. The only thing that bothers me is all the rock on the right side, not sure why. I feel like there should be more on the left to balance it, but still keeping the diagonal oa the water. All in all, I find this to be a fascinating image.
This a frightful image (i.e.,scenes from some diabolical place…) very well rendered. My efforts at this site were mundane, but this one is arresting! My only suggestion would be to render the “Well” a larger part of the image, but that’s just personal taste.
