Description
One of the iconic features of the Oregon Coast is Thor’s Well near Koch’s Chasm in the Cape Perpetua scenic area just south of Yachats. I have taken many images of the well from the observation area and even down close when the tide is low. Last year one of my goals was to shoot it with my drone. I felt that this was the best frame of several that I was pleased with. Click on the video link below to watch the show.>=))>
Bill, this is just stunning.
A unique perspective and tack- sharp.
Any chance of a bit more room on the left, so that rounded wave is not cut off ?
Amazing !
Hi @Bill_Fach, I’m not normally a drone image fan, but this is pretty special. The delicate filigree of the water streams is just extraordinary. Well seen and processed.
Every time I view one of your Thor’s Well drone images I think of cauliflower. Another exceptional shot. Loved the video. I’m always surprised at how sharp drone shot can be. Well done.
So totally cool!! It almost evokes computer-generated images based on things like chaos theory in mathematics. But the real thing is so much better! The drone image quality is amazing!
Bill, that video is amazing! I could have watched that for a very long time! Love the still image too. I don’t have any experience with drones. Can you create long exposures with them or is there too much movement? A long exposure of the water draining back in to the Well would be so cool. Really love the image. Well done.
The Mini series drone cameras have a fixed aperture (f1.7) so the only way to adjust exposure is with ISO and by using neutral density filters. It’s kind of cumbersome using the ND filters because to change them you have to do it manually. I shoot almost everything at ISO 100 as image quality does degrade with the higher ISOs. More advanced models do have variable apertures but the $$$ increase as well as the weight. Because the minis weigh less than 250 grams they don’t require any licensing. I would like to have a more capable drone but I use it so seldom that I can’t justify the extra expense and certifying effort. The rumored Mini 5 pro will have a better camera but it will still have the fixed aperture. I have done some longer exposures and the stabilization of the gimbal is pretty impressive. If it was allowed to fly drones in national parks I would upgrade in a heartbeat but there are more and more places that restrict them. There were some places on the coast where they are restricted because of the nesting sites.
I love the more or less abstract character of this image en the fact that it is difficult to estimate how big the scenery is. The details are very nice despite the shutter time of 1/30s. There is a lot to see and especially the hole is an interesting detail. An image where you can spent a a lot of time.
Makes me wonder what a cross section of the rock looks like that it behaves this way! Also, by the way, stunning images, especially the drone footage. I guess I can tick that one of my imaginary list!
