Hey Scott, the Portland Japanese Garden is also one of my favorite places. In 2019 I visited and over 40 times and photographed each time. What a wonderful place.
I think your image might be a tad too sharp, but it’s kind of hard to tell if it’s too sharp, or just JPG compression…
You have a classic composition of the waterfall feature. Nicely done with the shutter speed too.
To my eye and on my monitor I am not bothered by too much sharpness. But if you have questions about sharpness it might be worth trying a different version with a softer look–that would suit the scene as one of calmness if that is what you are going for.
I love the luminosity in this image. How everything has a glow. Personally, I find the image too busy. That’s just my personal and not a comment about the composition. The composition is good. I usually prefer simpler compositions most of the time but there is a beautiful staircase effect here with good things as you ascend it.
No I do not think it is too crunchy. To me, moss and leaves should have some texture, and this adds some sharp/smooth contrast against the smooth water at the base of the falls. Your choice of shutter spped nicely smoothed out the water at the bottom, as well as doing a good job on the falling water itself.
Thank you Ed! I have found that any shutter speed over 2 seconds to capture moving water makes it turn into “foam”. This image however worked at 3 seconds as the water volume was less that a rushing river. Appreciate the feedback!
I’m late here but I find the sharpness/detail to be very pleasing here. It doesn’t look oversharpened, and against the gorgeous soft water it gives a 3D effect that I love!
I too like the stair-stepped quality of the water. I’m not on my main monitor, so I can’t fairly judge the sharpness. It sounds like your happy though, and that’s what counts.
