Description
On our first night at Mount Rainier we camped just outside the park. We arrived around midnight and drove into the forest on a narrow road, finding a small flat spot nestled between trees. The following morning I awoke early and wandered down to the Ohanapecosh River with my camera. I spent over two hours exploring a small stretch of the river. This was one of the last images I made before packing it up so we could head into the park.

I really like this, Brett! It is dynamic and forceful.
At first blush, I thought the shadows were a tad too dense, but the in the full-size version the detail is there. You also handled the brights very well. The curved area at bottom helps tie everything together. The green strip on the right side could be desaturated just a little bit. Otherwise, this is a fine image and is print worthy.

Powerful photo! You can feel and almost hear the rumbling of the water. I love how the bottom edge is streaked giving the impression of fast motion then followed by the glassy smooth water dropping over the rock, and then slowly transitioning back to streaked water. It has so many great layers. You handled the whites perfectly on the left side, retaining oodles of detail, and the subtle green-aqua color coming through is perfect. I don’t mind the green stripe that @Preston_Birdwell mentioned, but it does somewhat grab the eye if you allow it too.
Brett: Powerful is the perfect descriptor for this marvelous scene and superb capture. The comp is perfectly balanced IMO and the color palette is wonderful. Well seen and presented. >=))>
A gorgeous capture! I’m not a landscape person but I wonder about darkening the water in the LR corner. The contrast of the upward curving highlights against the dark area pulls my eye away from the best stuff. I love the bit of green.
This is wonderful Bret! Funny that you have so many grand landscapes, and this little guy is probably one of my favorites of yours. I’m especially fond of varied textures in the water; they make wonderful contrast superimposed on the lovely colors.
The overall green and gold is quite striking. With that said, I think you have a twofer here because the green channel is a pretty cool black and white as well. (Not better, just a fun option.)
I like this very much as well. Strangely enough it’s the colors I like. And also that streak at the very bottom, the one that looks like the lightening bolt on the Chargers helmets. I think that the darker water in the top left corner is very important to balance the darker right side. In fact I might play around with darkening the large wedge of green below it. I’m not saying it would improve it. In my opinion you don’t want an image that’s half light and half dark if you can avoid it.
Thanks so much for the comments and suggestions, everyone.
@John_Williams I hadn’t even considered this for b&w but I think it does have potential. I’ll give it a shot.
@Preston_Birdwell I’ll try desaturating it a little bit. In post I made it slightly brighter, but didn’t add any saturation. The color of this water was unreal!
@Diane_Miller I might play around with darkening that corner a bit. Thank you!
Outstanding angle of view on this scene, Bret. The power we see here is amazing. The FG area is the real draw here for me. Excellent view in that small area. I see a couple neat images out of the one here with some simple crops. Always nice when the original scene provides a verity of options in overall post processing and reviews…
Hi Bret,
This is flat out gorgeous intimate landscape that shows off the raw power of moving water. The color palette is wonderful and I love your chosen SS as it has created some lovely textures and details in the flowing water. I find myself particularly drawn to the bottom two thirds of the image with that beautiful shade of green in the water and that amazing gold toned rock. Very nicely done; no suggestions from me.
