Description
Chrissy bought a planter with a variety of flowers earlier this year but it had gone quiet and I wasn’t paying much attention to it until this dahlia showed up. I’m paying more attention to it now. >=))>
Specific Feedback
Kind of breezy so single capture. I wanted enough detail in the center of the flower but also wanted the bud sufficiently OOF that it didn’t look like a mistake. Your thoughts?
Technical Details
Sony A7rIII
Sony FE 70-200 f2.8 GM-II , 2xTC @ 250mm
ISO 400, 1/50 @ f11

A single capture is all you needed here and the yellows are so well handled with the light giving nice detail. This could work well squarified, too, to simplify the BG a little. Dahlias are so amazing in their variability.
A Dahlia in May. That’s just cheating, Bill. They’re a fall flower here. Your depth of field worked nicely on this one and the composition works just fine for my taste.
Bill You have a great EYE !!! Your colors and composition is really Nice. I looked at your image folder. You have an amazing style in your photography. I really like your DOF and the clear sharp image. Im amazed how sharp you shot this at f2.8 Macro Lens ???
Bill, this is gorgeous! And yes, as @Dennis_Plank said, these guys are late summer early autumn blooms here in the PNW.
Anyway, well done on a spectacular image.
Gill: Thanks so much for the compliments, they mean a lot. This was actually shot at f11. I list the maximum aperture of the lens to distinguish this version of the 70-200 from the f4 model. This may be the sharpest lens in my bag. It is not a macro lens but when I need to get inside its minimum focal distance I can use extension tubes to get closer. I have a true 200mm macro lens that was my workhorse for many years and tens of thousands of images but to use it on the A7rIII I have to use a converter which is cumbersome and makes auto focusing erratic. The lens mount for Sony’s mirrorless cameras is different than the mount for their DSLRs. The converters work but many features don’t work when using them. So it goes. Thanks again for your interest and participation. >=))>
Hi Thanks for the info. I have an Old Macro lens. 1979 Nikkor 55mm macro lens. Old piece of glass. I really like this lens. It seems to photograph real accurate and pure. Maybe thats just me and my opinion. Any way I see you posting more Flora Images. Very Cool. Im really trying to meet the Photographers on the NPN. Im mostly a black and white photographer but im looking at the color photos images more and more. Learning the techniques. Your image folder is amazing. Thanks for your reply. always great to hear from you and others. Keep shooting. I am always looking and learning. Peace to You !!!
Bill, I’m very envious that you have dahlias already! There are so many varieties and colours, they are among my favorites. The perspective here is perfect, to show the flower and the bud behind it. The BG is excellent.
That blip of red between the flower and the bud draws my eye, so it might be toned down a bit.
Really lovely!
