Image Description
Keeping in mind that I usually “don’t shoot anything that moves,” mainly because I’m awful at it, I did take this shot last winter at the Biltmore Estate’s lagoon. It’s a haven for geese. On this day, I was amused that the geese almost looked like they were walking on water! In fact, I titled it “Walking on Water.”

The eyes are pretty much invisible. Is it a problem? And, like one of my landscape images, I’m not pleased with the aspect ratio.

Very cool!! (Figuratively and literally.) And the cool toning is just right. I think the aspect ratio is fine as it fits the composition, but maybe I’m missing something. I don’t mind not seeing the eyes – they would be tiny and we know they are there. The textures on the ice are lovely and I like the gradient from light to dark. The reflections are cool, too! Nice variety of poses. No nits!
At first I thought they were Sandhills, which roost in the water at Bosque del Apache and it often freezes at night, sometimes trapping them, and other times leaving them to try to take off without the assistance of using their feet like oars and with the hindrance of skidding like crazy. I never thought of Canada Geese in the same situation.
Thanks, @Diane_Miller! I just realized that this is another image that I posted last year. Oh, well. Life is a little chaotic right now.
I did change the toning, which I prefer to the sepia of last year’s.
Susanna, This is an interesting view of these geese. They are nicely placed in the frame and the ice offers lots of interesting textures as well as reflections. Overall, I’d burn-in the brights and the darks (but not the midtones) in the bottom half and dodge the brights in the top 1/3. I’d also dodge the darkest bits of the geese. Here’s my ideas in action…
