Weekly Challenge-Sago Palm Black Racer

Image(s)

Image Description

Sometimes it just pays to look around your own backyard! I’m always away shooting in other locations, but happened to come home and my husband pointed out this beautiful Black Racer snake taking up residence in one of our Sago Palms at our home in St. Simons Island, Georgia. As it was November and the temperatures were starting to get cooler, the snake was using the palm bloom as a warming spot. The large female bloom of this particular Sago Palm had been providing natural cover for geckos and now this snake. The palm leaves were difficult to shoot through and I didn’t want to scare the snake so I stayed a safe distance and used an 800mm lens. I love moody portraits like this and the creamy nature of the greenery surrounding the snake was an added bonus.

Hi Christine, at first glance I thought the Racer’s body was a branch because it seemed too big to go with his head, lol! So I do prefer this one over your other similar posting because his body is less dominating and doesn’t take my attention away from his head as much. I like his pose and he appears very serious and intimidating. The creamy green foliage surrounding him provides a nice frame for the sharp details in his head. Really a well done image.

Thank you @Jim_Lockhart ! Appreciate it!

Wow! Love the DOF and OOF foreground/background focusing in on the racer’s head. If it were mine, I’d consider a slightly tighter crop, just slightly, to further accentuate the focus on the subject. What a great backyard find!

What a great little snake. I love that you can see his face in clear focus, but also the OOF rest of him. I find snakes a bit awkward to make a nice composition, but you’ve nailed it. I like seeing the habitat.

Thank you @Cathy_Proenza and @Glenys_Passier . Appreciate the feedback!!

Hi Christine! I really like this image! The sharp details of the head and depth of the focus plane is just right. The intense stare as he watches you, and the “creamy green foliage surrounding him” as Jim mentioned, is excellent. I wouldn’t change a thing. Well done!
