What Lies Beneath

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Going over some old low res files upscaling with Gigapixel Ai. This is from my first digital camera, a Canon 30D with a whopping 8 mp. I tried filling in the patches of sky, but my 5k iMac died and now I’m on my old 2012 iMac backup. It won’t let me install later than 2021 PS. The generative fill is not that great, was just creating orange blobs so let them be.

Specific Feedback

Any and all feedback is welcome.

Mike, this is a lovely branch with it’s colorful leaves. Having the branch angling in from the upper left works well. I am bothered by how green and blue/green the foliage peeking through the gaps in the leaves is. You might want to do some local desaturation in those areas. There’s a fundamental theorem in physics that says you can’t increase the amount of information in any measurement (in this case your picture) after the measurement is made. However, increasing the pixel count does let you make a larger print with out degrading the viewing, since the human vision system is not nearly as good as todays high res. cameras.

Hi Mike,
I too like the way the branch angles into the image from the ULC with it’s downward trajectory toward the LRC. I also am enjoying the way the smaller branches radiate outward as they fill the frame with those colorful autumn maple leaves. The color looks to be peak. Since you are having a problem I thought I would play with it a bit until you get your issues fixed. I only filled in those two upper bare spots as I like the one along the bottom edge with the green leaves in it. I also reduced the saturation of those green leaves that @Mark_Seaver mentioned. I also lightened the scene with a small levels adjustment. Just my opinions of course. I quite like this.

Mike: A real frame filler and I like that the sky parts aren’t blown. I do like Ed’s refinement. Hope you get your computer gear updated soon. >=))>
