Critique Style Requested: Standard

Description

Just out in the garden and this guy flew in. Grab the camera and shot as much as possible because he was on the move. I have never seen a Dragonfly on this color… I believe this is a female. The tail has more brown than the male. Pretty happy with my grab and Go image !!! Just wanted to share here on the NPN.

Specific Feedback

All comments welcomed. I think I captured this pretty accurate. I am new at this style of photography. Very challenging. All Feedback can really help me in this style of Photography …

Another View Point of this Guy !!!

Both are excellent, Gill. the weathered wood makes a perfect background for this critter and the spread wings are displayed perfectly.

Gill: Like @Dennis_Plank I like both of these but the inclusion of the knot in the wood on # 2 really appeals to me. My only suggestion for that image would be a touch more room for the DF up top. A simple generative expand fixes this nicely for me. Really good captures both. >=))>

Thanks. He stayed still enough to get a few shots. I had to shoot fast and hope I got an image I liked.

Hi Gill,

I consulted iNaturalist and Dragonflies of North America. They agree with you: this is a female Common Whitetail.

I hope you continue to stalk the dragonflies and damselflies. They’ve got just about everything going for them. Fascinating behavior.; brilliant patterns and colors.; super fast action. And they keep gentlemen’s hours (morning and midday).

Gil, these are excellent. The wood BG is sweet, the position of the 'fly is perfect and that knot adds a lot. I agree a little more room on top would be good.
Your processing is perfect.

Yes I see what you are saying. … A little more headroom. I cropped the top because i didn’t like what I had in framing. It just looked bad . But this new edit really fixed that issue. Really nice. Thanks so much !!!

HI Gill, another vote for the second image and a bit more room on top. Really interesting composition with the wood and knot. These go together really well. Looking at the largest size, I think the dragonfly would benefit to some noise reduction. Nice frames.

Gil, both takes show the dragonfly very well. The weathered wood coordinates very well with her colors. The knot in #2 makes a great counterpoint to the dragonfly as it mimics her colors.

Thanks. Some over head was added and posted. I used some noise reduction. Maybe I’ll re-edited and see how it goes.

Thanks again.

Great shots, Gill. The second one shows the color on the df’s bands better too. And the knot makes for a very interesting composition (with Bill’s addition). Well taken indeed!

Thanks Mike. I appreciate that. I had to hurry to get this image. Never knew if he would fly off.
