White-throated Dipper

Recently I posted an image of the White-throated Dipper. That particular bird has a reddish belly, but we also have a subspecies in Europe with a blackish belly; the latter mainly living in the northern part of Europe. This was the bird I was after when I shot the Tawny Owl (see other recent post). I did not find it, but found an image of the bird that I took back in 2010. Hope you like it! Where my experience with the ‘red’ bird is that they are very shy, the ‘black’ birds seem to be much more at easy with people. Thanks for any comments, Cheers, Hans
p.s. exif says f4.8 , no idea if that’s possible …

Hi Hans
Well in 2010 the Nikon D300 was a flag-ship camera with just over 12 meg image pickup. This photo also shows your 300mm f2.8 has held up well. The Dipper looks vary nice, with good feather detail and coloring. The dark rock background and water help the Dipper stand out. Nice work in 2010 and now.

Excellent look at the 10 year old dipper. This species seems to be a little plumper than its North American cousin. Good detail, pose, and environment. The 300 2.8 is one of the sharpest telephotos made by Nikon.

A very nice image of the dipper, Hans. Excellent detail and a great pose. You mention using a TC with your 300 f/2.8 lens. Nikon’s 1.7 TC with the lens at f/2.8 would give you an equivalent f/4.76, hence the f/4.8. in exif.

Dippers are very challenging birds to capture and you did very with this one. The dipper’s head is very nice and I like the head turn. The BG has a lot of contrast, but helps frame the bird. I like this as presented. Well done…Jim

Very nice shot. Well exposed and lots of detail with a very nice head turn. An interesting looking bird and makes a person wonder why they adapted this way.
