Who’s There?

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I love Joshua Trees. They can be such characters, as I found these guys to be.

Specific Feedback

I worry about the little guy (Joshua) in the center of the bigger ones. Should it be more of a presence? It has a lot of depth if field - should it be less to allow the gaze to stay with the trees more?

This is very cool!! Symmetries abound – the tree, the dead limb on the ground, the bush in front, even the branches in the BG. The smaller branch in the BG and the centered rock nail down the center – I wouldn’t change anything, except maybe a wish for just a bit more room on the top and sides, but it’s quite OK as it is, with wonderful colors and sharp detail!

Haha! I didn’t even see the beg dead wood behind the tree …that’s why we do this with each other, right? Thank you Diane!

Just wonderful! You rocked the symmetry on this. The colors are delicious. Everything is crisp from front to back. There is so much interest in this image. My eyes keep going through it again and again. I’m with Dian in that I’d like to see just a touch more room at the top.

Yes. Looking at it from that POV I too get the feeling of the crop being too tight. Thank you @Chris_Baird and @Diane_Miller . I’ll give it a go.

Connie, this is excellent. A lovely mix of bright colours, shapes, symmetry, and every bit is interesting. That rock in the middle back is perfectly centered, as well.
I agree that a bit more room on top would be a benefit.
Just wonderful!

I had a look at this based on your title. To me, the photo is an insect with the two main green leaf areas being the eyes, the center piece of green, the nose, the rocks / cloud being the head. The tree trunk above the red bush being the mouth and the red being the hiding place.

Maybe I would try reducing the impact of the bent light grey wood center left and a touch more contrast for the top half. I am playing with ideas here as none of these suggestions are a blight on what is a pretty good photo.

Connie: Well this is nirvana for a color junkie like me. The comp with the BG mountain centered in the Vee and the relative symmetry of the tree works really well for me. Great find, comp and capture. :+1: :+1:>=))>

Thank you Rob and Bill for your comments and thoughts!

What a great scene. The symmetry is wonderful, and the colors are to die for. My only (minor) suggestion would be to desaturate the blue sky in the upper corners. Just enough, though, to reduce the slight blue fringing around the squiggly branches in the corners. Very well seen!

Eeek! The dreaded CA!! Did not see that. Thank you Bonnie

Connie, this is great. You’ve got a fine mix of red, green and blue. I love how the J-tree seems to be hovering (lurking???) over the red shrub. Then you’ve got the distant rocks peeking through at the back.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! The frumious Bandersnatch!”
There was quite the stir in the mid-sixties when certain scholars attached a bit of an erotic connotation to Carroll’s poem. When I saw this for the first time, this line from the poem came immediately to mind and the visualization of all the components of the scene, well you might see where my school-age mind went.
But, to the actual composition, I agree as to the need for more top space. Other than that, I applaud you on the wonderful focus stack.

Hahaha! Oh Chris that gave me a good chuckle this morning, thank you for that. My grandson had a similar impression - the trees reminded him of a Demogorgon, a scary monster from Stranger Things tv series. Whether insect, monster or simply tree, they do seem to possess a message of character, and it’s what drew me to photograph them.
