Description
I never used my 180-400mm f4 for dragonflies and it appears quite capable of capturing the details. The BG is a floating algal mat and the bokeh results from the sparkling highlights from the rugose surface of the algae.
Specific Feedback
Not my favorite angle for shooting these insects. I prefer a more lateral view that shows off the eyes better. How do you like the bokeh? I actually like them and adds some glitter to the BG.
Technical Details
Z9 180-400mm f4 with 1.4TC engaged, + 12mm extension tube (1/250 sec at f20, ISO 800) Levels, bump up in shadows and reduction of highlights, crop for comp, Brightness & Contrast…Jim

Jim: Wonderful subject and I’m very OK with the position as it shows off the wing details so well. Count me as one liking the bokeh too and the perch is a big plus IMO. I tend to use my 70-200 with a 2x much more than my 200 macro simply because I like the extra reach and the AF is so much more accurate and fast. I wonder if any of the majors will ever come out with a 200 macro for mirrorless. One can hope. Terrific image here. >=))>
Jim, I too like the bokeh balls in this image. Wonderful sharpness in the DF throughout, with a nice smooth BG that makes the subject pop. The position is good with me. They pose the way they pose and we deal with what is handed to us in nature. Like @Bill_Fach said, it shows off the wings which you have such nice details in.
The bokeh is subtle, but adds a sense of energy and heat of the sun so it fits. Lots of nice detail in the wings and body, too. A long tele is a great macro lens sometimes - I use mine quite a bit this way, especially for dragonflies. Quite a lovely shot.
Really nice picture. I love the sharpness of the dragonfly and shows off all of the beautiful detail of the wings. The bokeh is really nice..makes the picture look magical like dragonflies are. I feel like a little less of a crop would give the dragonfly a bit more breathing room…but that’s just me. Great picture Jim.
Hi Jim,
Nice details throughout on the skimmer. Great to catch such a pristine subject. I can take or leave the bokeh balls. They add some separate interest but are also a bit of a distraction to my eye. A very fine shot either way though. Always love seeing these at the local ponds here.
Yes, the tele is good for reaching dfs and butterflies, especially over water or where they are very skittish. This is a fine example, and I do like bokeh balls when they’re as circular as these. Do you think the extension tube was necessary? Lovely shot, Jim.
