Winter Tree Shadows

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was taken on January 18, 2018 in North Carolina right after a sizable amount of snow had fallen. Shooting into the sun allowed the capture of interesting shadows from each of the trees. The two trees on the left were the intended dominant subject with the tree on the right foreground providing a counter balance. There are no footprints anywhere, which is something I always enjoy when it happens! Where I live there is no snow right now so that’s why I’ve pulled from my older photos. All critiques and comments welcome!

Specific Feedback

What do you think of the sunspots? Do they add interest or detract from the image? I’m still working on how, if possible, to shoot directly toward the sun and avoid this.

Technical Details

Nikon D7200 APS-C. 18mm (27mm FF equiv.). F8. 1/500.

Tom, this is a great winter wonderland scene. New fallen snow in the sun is always a delight. The trees with their snow and the long shadows make a fine scene. The biggest sun flare is interesting because it’s so nice and round…feels somewhat like the sun, but not nearly as bright. As I look at this I’m thinking that an alternate view would be a vertical, emphasizing even more those two main trees and their long shadows. You could crop this to square to get a similar effect. The small tree on the right is good for this full format horizontal view.

Hi Tom, this is a very attractive Winter scene you’ve captured, highlighting the long shadows that come this time of year. The snow is unmarked and pristine, not even animal tracks to mar the view. I think beside providing balance, the foreground tree helps to add depth to the whole scene. Sunspots are not a real issue; the big one adds interest and I would probably erase the small one. A fine presentation.

Hi Mark— Thank you for yourmany comments. I’ll try the resizing you suggest. Cheers!

Hi Jim— Thank you for your review and insights into the sunspots. Eliminating the smaller spot is a great idea and will definitely try editing that.

I love those shadows Tom; I can see why they attracted you. Sun spots are tricky, and I too struggle with how much to leave them and how much to try to remove them. Below is a crude run at what it would look like without them; I think the image is fine either way.

Thanks much for the edit, John. I think I’ve grown used to seeing the sun spots but this looks great too.
