About This Image

While on Vinalhaven last July we were treated to several tremendous sunsets and luckily all I had to do was walk down to the cove. This was the last night and I wanted to do something different and so focused not just on the sky, but on the boats at the neighboring dock. I think it says a lot more about seacoast living than just a sunset with land or water only. Sure it isn’t exactly a “pristine” nature image, but I like the added interest of the boats. I also remember deliberately choosing the mid-range telephoto so that I could not take the same type of shot I had on previous evenings.

What say you? Rather just earth, water and sky? I have those, too. Insofar as this one, I think I have a few more angles or framing, but liked this one best. There are trees immediately to the left of the edge where I cropped. Would it benefit from alternate processing?

I definitely think the boats add a sense of human habitation to the image, Kris, while the overall image with what look like clean shores indicates that the population isn’t dense. Very nicely done.

Thanks @Dennis_Plank - the coast of Maine can be thickly settled and has been for centuries, so it’s really tough to find any landscapes without something human in them even if it is a bit sparse in places. So emphasizing that seemed the way to go on this final night.

Great image. I love the sunset colors and the shafts of light. I really like the boats, for me it takes it beyond the usual sunset image and tells a great story!

Thanks @timothy3 - those sun shafts were the bonus over the color in general. I haven’t seen or photographed them often so it was a real privilege.

Beautiful sunset scene Kris. I call it a “reflectionscape.” :slight_smile:

I love the crispness of the reflection and the litle waves make all the difference. This image just brings me there.

Reflectionscape is perfect @Lon_Overacker - It was lucky that I could manage such a quick shutter speed at that ISO and so everything has really defined outlines. I’m glad it feels evocative of its time and place.
