Yakima River in November

I meant to include my concern about the sky-too much?

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I really like the light and the fall color. Usually the leaves are bare and there is little color this late, but it has been a very warm fall.

Specific Feedback

I’m concerned about the branches on lower left intruding and drawing attention (also not a clean edge). Not sure what to do about them, if anything.

Lovely fall image. The subdued colors create a very pleasent dreamy mood. I played around with the crop to reduce the weight of the right side (more intense color, more mass). I also cropped off some of the left side which gets rid of the intruding branches and I think improves the balance, then

also cropped some of the sky and bottom. Not sure if it is better…just different.

Hi Jim,
I am loving the combination of warm and cool tones in this landscape. The light is also quite nice. While this is wonderful as is I could see a small crop from the left and top sides to address the two issues that you mentioned. That would get rid of that bush and make the sky even more dramatic. I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking. Just my opinion of course. Beautifully done!

Jim, this is a very inviting look along the river under a dramatic sky. Both @Tony_Siciliano and @Ed_Lowe crops look good and fix the branches over the river on the right problem. I also like Ed’s adding of more contrast to the upper clouds. I’ve been in a “more brightness” mood recently, so I am wondering how pulling up the overall tone cure slightly would look. It could add a bit more color to the willows along the river.

@Tony_Siciliano @Ed_Lowe @Mark_Seaver Thank you for your helpful suggestions. As Doug Hoover said in response to comments about his recent “Grand Canyon Pano”: “That’s the beauty of NPN. Another set of eyes is always helpful.” In this case, several sets of eyes.

Hi, Jim - Lovely light, killer sky and a beautiful composition. I’m not bothered at all about the amount of sky as the heavy clouds hold a lot of interest and are a nice contrast to the brighter, lighter sunlit foliage. The branches intruding from bottom left don’t bother me a whole lot but I do prefer the cropped versions shared by Tony and Ed, although if it were mine I would keep all of the sky.

@Bret_Edge Another much appreciated suggestion. Now that I have had time to consider the suggested changes, I have decided that I do like the sky as posted. The other suggestions are very intriguing, however.
